If your registrar locked your domains tomorrow, what would you have?

Your domain, your email and your logins can all hang on one registrar account. This page exports the public DNS records of a domain so you have a copy, then walks you through the checks that make a lockout survivable. The export runs in your browser and nothing is saved on our server.

Checklist and templates, not legal advice. We cannot make any registrar release or restore a domain. This helps you recover faster and lose less. Not affiliated with any registrar.

Why now

On October 18, 2026 a Hacker News post titled "Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains" reached hundreds of points. It links a user's own account of the incident. We have not verified it and the registrar's side is not in it, so treat it as one person's report. The lesson holds for any registrar: a suspension, a billing error, a hijacked login or a mistaken abuse report can take a domain offline, and the registrar controls the process to move it.

Export your DNS records

How it works: your browser asks Cloudflare's public DNS over HTTPS service (documented here) for the common record types of the name you type. It only finds records for the root name and a few common names (www, mail, api, app, blog, status), and never zone transfers, so it can miss records at other names. Check your DNS provider's own export too.

Lockout checklist

Transfer rules come from ICANN policy: a transfer needs the registrant's authorization and an authorization code, and a domain cannot be transferred in the first 60 days after registration or after a previous transfer. See the ICANN transfer policy and ICANN name holder FAQ.

Want the full runbook and workbook?

What is at stake. A suspension, a billing error or a hijacked registrar login can take a domain offline, and the registrar controls the process to move it. A user on Hacker News reported on October 18, 2026 that all of their domains were disabled by their registrar (item 50142866); we have not verified that account. ICANN policy bars transfers for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer (transfer policy), so planning a second registrar early matters. We do not put a dollar figure on your downtime; you know it better than we do.
